Home BasketShared shopping, kept simple

Practical household shopping guides

One list, from the kitchen to checkout.

A useful shared list needs more than item names. Agree on quantities, show what has been bought, and keep a record the household can check later.

These guides follow Home Basket's current shopping flow. Examples use made-up household items and amounts, so you can try the ideas without sharing anyone's private records.

Guide 01 · Before the shop

Build a list everyone can use.

When shopping requests arrive in separate messages, the shopper has to combine them and ask follow-up questions. Put the requests into one household list, and make each item specific enough to buy.

  1. Set up the household. Open Home Basket and choose Create household, or choose Join household if someone has already set it up. Joining uses the invite code shared by a household member. Keep that code within your household.
  2. Check what is already there. Search the active basket before adding another request. If milk is already pending, agree on the total quantity rather than leaving two unclear requests.
  3. Add an item with a clear quantity. Use Add item, enter the name and quantity, and check the category before saving. A quantity such as “2 x 1 litre” is more useful than “some milk”.
  4. Review together before leaving. Check the fridge and cupboard against the list. Remove requests you no longer need and clarify sizes or alternatives with the person who added them.

Home Basket syncs shared changes when connected. Before another person starts shopping, check that their device is connected and showing the current list. A screenshot or an old message will not reflect later changes.

Guide 02 · At the shop

Keep “still needed” separate from “bought”.

Home Basket separates pending items from bought items. That distinction lets the household see the shopping progress while keeping bought items ready for purchase logging.

  1. Focus on pending items. Open the active basket and use the Pending filter to see outstanding requests. Search by name when you need to find a particular item.
  2. Mark only what you actually have. Use Mark bought after picking up the item or receiving the delivery. An item you could not find should remain pending unless the household decides to remove it.
  3. Correct a tap when needed. If you marked an item too early, use Move back to active. It can then appear with the items still needed.
  4. Check before checkout. Use the Bought filter to review what is ready for purchase logging. Confirm any substitutions or changed quantities with the household before completing the purchase.

If two household members shop at the same time, coordinate who is collecting which items and check that updates have synced. A shared list provides visibility; it cannot reserve stock in a shop or prevent both people picking up the same item at the same instant.

Guide 03 · After checkout

Turn bought items into a useful record.

Marking items bought is the shopping step. Recording the purchase is a separate step: it clears those bought items from the shared list and adds the purchase to the household's history.

  1. Open purchases. Use Open purchases from the basket when bought items are ready, or go to the purchases view.
  2. Check the shopper and items. In Record this purchase, select the household member who shopped and review the bought items. Move an item back to active if it was not part of this purchase.
  3. Record the details you have. Spend and receipt proof are optional. If you attach a receipt and read its lines, review the extracted details against the receipt and correct errors before saving.
  4. Save and review. Use Record purchase as followed by the selected member's name. Check Recent purchases afterwards to confirm the recorded entry.

Purchase history can help you look back at recorded shopping, and its Add back action can return an item to the active list when you need it again. Check the new quantity instead of assuming the last purchase is still right for today.

Recorded totals reflect the purchases and amounts entered into Home Basket. They are not bank balances or a complete picture of household spending. If you use the optional household budget, check its currency and payday-based cycle settings so that the recorded purchases are interpreted in the intended period.
